This work is from my senior exhibit that I put together to graduate from Asbury University in 2013. The show is made up of  four mixed media paintings and 10 photoshoots. The photoshoots weave together quilt patters and a variety of relationships and are displayed in two large photo quilts and 10 wood transfer prints. The 3'x3' mixed media paintings have collaged paper quilt patterns in the background and oil paintings layered on top of that.  The paintings bring to life a variety of historic quilt patterns.

Piecing It All Together

Artist Statment

Quilts are created in celebration—celebration of new life and new beginnings, celebration of heritage and history, celebration of family, community and those we love.  They celebrate times of joy and offer comfort in times of need. A quilt tells a story, piecing together a variety of shapes and patterns to create something beautiful and personally meaningful.

These quilted pieces tangibly connect us to the beloved people and treasured moments that bless our lives.  Sometimes these pieces get torn apart or lost, but they can be mended and patched back together, providing us hope and perseverance.

Many historic quilt patterns, such as Grandmother’s Flower Garden, Sunbonnet Sue, and the Double Wedding Ring, are symbolic and tell stories of life. Several of my works play off of these recognizable patterns. These works bring the stories embedded in the quilts to new life in a playful and light-hearted way.  My show pieces together a variety of people in my life and patterns to reveal a community that celebrates life and the quilt.
